Presenting an artistic perforated screen to the street, this new base for Nelson Orthodontics is one of the most advanced clinics in Australasia.

Nelson Orthodontics

Located on a prominent corner site in Richmond, this purpose-built two-storey clinic delivers a modern, welcoming environment for the Nelson Orthodontics Richmond Practice and its community. The design responds sensitively to its residential surroundings by adopting a low-profile form and a perforated façade, which incorporates a bespoke artwork ‘Haumanu’ by Robin Slow, weaving local culture, light and privacy into the architecture.

Inside, the space is configured for efficient patient flow — open-plan treatment areas for shorter appointments alongside dedicated consultation rooms — while a warm material palette, a two-storey planted wall and dappled light create a comfortable, non-clinical experience. Durable, low-maintenance materials support the building’s function and longevity.

This project received a Commercial Architecture Award in the NZIA Nelson Marlborough Architecture Awards in 2024.
